An important part of the DinnerIn ethos is giving delicious meals to people in need. It’s actually built into our business model – for every 10 meals we sell through our website, one meal is donated to a good cause.
Since we launched four weeks ago ( learn more about us here ), our website’s been running hot. Time-poor Wellingtonians are loving how they can order delicious, home-cooked meals online and make everyday life a little less chaotic. And because the orders have been pouring in, we’ve been able to gift nearly 90 meals to Wellington Women’s Refuge.
Philippa McAtee, Manager of Wellington Women’s Refuge, explains how the meals are making a difference:
Last week we admitted a woman with three children into the safe house. She came from out of the area, so the family arrived tired, late in the day.
We were able to give some meals to this family, and having a selection meant the mother was able to pick out what she knew her children would eat and enjoy.
She was touched to know that these meals were donated and appreciated that people had cared to make this happen.
As a mother, to know she had healthy meals that only had to be heated made all the difference.
Her exhausted children could be fed a good meal before going to bed.
Women’s Refuge has frozen some of the ready to eat meals donated by DinnerIn, so that they always have tasty pre-made dinners ready for new arrivals. In domestic abuse situations, women and children often have to decide at short notice to seek help at a safehouse, which means they arrive at the Wellington Women’s Refuge with next to nothing.
At times of stress, healthy eating often goes out the window, which is not great because nutritious food helps to sustain people through tough times. The meals donated by DinnerIn are a treat for the families we assist because they make a sad time just a bit easier.
At DinnerIn we know it’s a partnership in helping Wellington Women’s Refuge. The credit really belongs to our wonderful customers – without their meal orders, we wouldn’t be in a position to donate these meals.
We even have customers who have gifted DinnerIn meal subscriptions to families in need. As the saying goes: ‘We all rise by lifting others’.
